Grammar Series: Nouns

I’m excited to announce a new grammar series, starting with an overview of NOUNS! Check out the video here:

Here are the excerpts used for practice near the end of this video if you’d like to download it and mark it up: Practice: Identifying Nouns

There are ten more videos — so far! — coming in this series: pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, objects, phrases, clauses, and sentence types. These videos will form a foundation for other lessons that will help students with their writing: how to fix/avoid run-ons, comma splices, and dangling participles; how to check for subject/verb and pronoun/antecedent agreement; how to ensure parallelism in writing; and so on.

But in the meantime, if you need more help with nouns, here are some great resources that I discovered while planning this series:

Nouns (Schoolhouse Rock!):

Nouns (The Tongue Untied):

Nouns (Ginger Grammar Rules):

What is a noun? (English Grammar Revolution):

Noun notes (Duke of Definition):

Verbals (NOT verbs), some of which are nouns (The Tongue Untied):

Gerunds (The Tongue Untied):

Noun infinitives (Daily Grammar):

Infinitives (Purdue OWL):

Infinitives, some of which are nouns (The Tongue Untied):

Count and non-count nouns (Purdue OWL):

Identifying nouns – practice (English Zone):

Identifying nouns – practice (Duke of Definition):

Noun exercises (IXL):

*** NOTE: A Redditor pointed out to me that IXL limits how many exercises one can do without a subscription but also discovered that all you have to do is close the browser window and open a new one. Voila!
